Richmond
defeat St Virgil's by 42 points.
(The Munday report below)
In
front of a crowd of about 2000, the game opened at a frenetic pace with Richmond
creating most of the chances, but St Virgil's held firm and trailed by only nine
points at quarter time. With Scott Dickson controlling the ruck, St Virgil's hit
its straps, scoring four goals to Richmond's one, and it led by nine points at
half-time. Things changed in the third quarter with Richmond taking control, but
misses saw a one-point St Virgil's lead entering the final quarter. But Richmond
then piled on seven goals without reply to win a high-class game.
Best for Richmond were onballers Adam Daft -- who also was awarded the John
Kenny medal for best on ground -- Julian Sturzaker and Adam Baines, defenders
Josh Woolley and Ben Cato and forward Heath Barwin. Best for St Virgil's, Jason
Frawley was rock-like in defence, with Josh and Jay Nibbs, Matthew Parker and
Scott Quinn good contributors.
In
the reserves Hutchins was too fast for DOSA, registering a 37-point victory to
win its ninth reserves premiership since 1983, with Hutchins' Doug Rossiter
winning the W. (Bill) Trethewie medal for best on ground.

Our thoughts are with
Mark Williams and his family
The Committee and Players of the OHA
Football Club are saddened to hear of the passing of Steve Williams, father of
Club Life Member Mark Williams. Steve has been a staunch supporter of both his
son and the OHA Football Club over the last 14 years. The Steve Williams
Joinery has been a regular sponsor of the club over that period.
Our best wishes go to Mark and all his
family.
SHIPS BOW OUT IN 2009 In a case proving the point that bad kicking is
bad football, innacuracy in front of goal played a key part in the Ships first
semi final loss to University by 40 points. The normally reliable Sam
Bowering was unable to focus his radar throughout the day and this proved
costly, particulalry early in the game. Other skill errors around the
ground were also noticable and influenced today's performance. Final
scores were
University
19 .13 127
OHA
11 . 21 87
In the second semi final a goal
after the siren saw St Virgils defeat ladder leader Richmond by that margin.
In a tight struggle Richmond recovered from a 20 point 3/4 time deficit to get
scores level late in the game. A number confusing umpiring decisions
left the crowd and players confused throughout.
At this stage next week sees
Richmond take on University at Queenborough.
Full details available later.
A quick Message from the Secretary
G'day All,
This week sees us play our last
home game for the season against Hutchins. It would be great to see as many past
players as possible to support the boys before they head into the finals the
following week. To those who attended the 90th
anniversary dinner it was an excellent night with over 150 reminiscing about the
good old days of being a ship, we thank you again for your continued support of
the club. Some happy snaps below. More will be added shortly.

The Munday Report from Round 21:
RICHMOND, St Virgils and OHA registered comfortable wins in
the lead up to their finals in the Old Scholars Football Association.
Richmond had all the
answers against DOSA and with Adam Daft, Andrew Haines and Steven Dick
supplying plenty of quality ball to their forwards.
That allowed Aaron Reeve, Chris Crossin and Scott Boxall to run riot.
Richmond had the game in control at half time leading by 69 points, which
eventually blew out to 133 points at the final siren. Ivan
Ransley, Nathan Abrahams, Kim Harvey, Pat Carroll, Aaron Davey and Brady
Pearton stood tall for DOSA.
St Virgils shrugged off a
determined Channel at Snug Park. A
seven goal opening term set up the visitors win. Quick
ball movement and accurate finishing was a feature, with Scott Quinn, Josh
Nibbs, Matthew Parker and Sam Unsworth standout players.
Channel found it tough going but fought the game out through Jarrod
Mason, Jamey Webster, Nick Butler and Adam Sharp.
OHA were too strong for
Hutchins winning by 67 points and restricting the visitors to one goal for
the game. Brendan Rogers was
dominant for the home team supported by Matthew Zukauskas, Brad Marsland and
Ben Langford. Hutchins struggled throughout, but onballers Scott Nichols,
Nick Leitch and Jamie Harriss and defender Alistair Sayers never gave up.

20June 2009 - The ships return
to home port and enjoy comfortable victories in both grades |
| |
|
In a lopsided day at Geilston Bay both sides were able to complete
resounding victories over an undermanned Channel.
Come the 2
o’clock game the seniors welcomed back several key players from a variety of
injuries. Chicken Legs (9 goals) returned the full forward after his
serious injury (wedding and honeymoon) to propel himself past Chilli at the
head of the association goal kicking. Banger was his usual pacy pest and
bagged a quiet 4 while Nicko again showed himself as a senior player with
another 4. Wig Langford was outstanding off half back and his skill in
delivering the ball was a major reason the forwards were able to capitalise
and to this extent he was ably supported by Rowdy Doyle. Coach McCallum
showed a pace and zip not seen since the mid 90’s to sneak quietly into the
forward line and rack up four of his own. Chilli, while relinquishing his
goal kicking lead, again showed the benefits of a full preseason by roaming
far and created countless opportunities for his team mates. Proey revelled
in the sunny conditions and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to don the
white shorts to show off the quickly fading tan. There is an unconfirmed
rumour that after leaving Australia all shirts were stowed in the luggage
and not seen until he returned but far from this web site to announce that.
In
the early game signs were evident from the opening bounce with the ships
boys continually driven forward by the highly (self) skilled Brad Marsland
providing countless opportunities for his forwards. The two focal
points in the forward line in Dave Saunders (8 goals) and Leppa (7 goals)
took full advantage of their countless opportunities. Gav showed why he is
one of the cornerstones of the club and relentless hard running form the
backline was duly rewarded. In the lead up to his 30th birthday
celebrations Laura was again his reliable self and was ably supported
through the midfield by another also approaching veteran status in Bater.
Might be a bit of a stretch to call Laura reliable as he didn't turn up
until quarter time due to him not being able to tell the time (while
strongly denying that he'd been on the turps on Friday night). In what
can only be described as a truly selfish act the Freezer took it upon
himself to drift up the ground to kick a goal just to get his name in the
paper. Shameless, but apparently not unexpected. While admitting
he was seen up forward, Freezer was quick to claim it was under SOS's
instructions and was clearly lost for most of the day after taken out of the backline soon after quarter time. After
kicking his 9th goals in over 120 games, he is clearly an an untapped
resource and a wonderful committee man. |

13June 2009 - The ships had the

| |
|
6 June 2009 - Wet and miserable
conditions conspire to sink ships in second loss to Richmond this season |
|
While lucky to be playing on the sandy Richmond oval both sides were unable
to cope with the wet weather and suffered convincing losses to a more
desperate Richmond led by the son of Ship's legends Arnie & Janet, Andrew Haines. Doc Ryan,
Alfie Hollick and the Monk Dog were stoic in their defensive efforts and
Grabba Teirney put in is usual performance on the ball. Other good players
were Parma Schnitzerling who ran from start to finish trying to help out all
over the ground and Tickets Butterworth. Up forward things were a lot
quieter but Chilli managed to steer through 3 majors to maintain his lead at
the head of the Association goal kicking table.
In the reserves things looked impressive with the return of a Geappen to the
team for the first time in 14 years since Brett played while still a mummy's
boy. Young Matthew showed his youth to be a valuable asset as he ran around
the wide open spaces to collect disposals on a consistent basis. At the
other end of the scale Bobby Blandon showed experience is a valuable asset
while Will Garvey showed he has lost nothing despite not playing for a
couple of years. The inclusion of these players and the return of the
Bagger were not enough to help the boys get up in what can only be described
as a disappointing performance, particularly in light of the fact that Stuey
James ran onto the ground in a ships jumper for the 150th time, earning life
membership in the process. Congratulations to Stuart.

30 May 2009 - Another
Chilly performance on a cold day inspires a double victory against our
visitors from the Northern Suburbs |
|
Playing against DOSA on a wintery day at Geilston Bay, a blistering first
quarter was the catalyst for a reminder for supporters what we are capable
of as a club. With plenty of midfield drive from Trent Moore, Matt Zukauskas
and the pacy Craig Unsworth the forward line were able to find space to move
to convert opportunities. Andrew Chilcott moved up the leading goalkicking
ladder with a quiet 6 and was ably supported by Ashley Banks with 5. Daniel
Archer showed again what the rewards can be for effort and highlighted how
lucky we were that he chose to join ships dock this year. In a consistent 4
quarter effort the ships eventually ran out comfortable 15 goal winners.
In the reserves a 7 goal performance by big Nik at fill forward was the
reason behind the ships inflicting a narrow 6 point victory against ladder
leader DOSA. In worrying signs for the club, bordering on embarrassing
really, club games record holder Nigel Oliver was recalled from super fools
to make up numbers. While e did kick a goal, he again proved his value as a
numbers man and the “retire again” call was soon heard through the club
rooms. Mark Monks was again outstanding across half back and "veteran" Todd
Rider showed glimpses of his Cygnet form. Stu Luck was elusive around the
forward line and capped of his efforts with a lazy couple of goals. |

23 May 2009 - Legends steer ships to double victory against the
Beans |
|
After some recent frustrations both the seniors and reserves recorded
victories over forgotten powerhouse Hutchins. In a close encounter in the
seniors the support for the hill proved vital in steering the side to a nail
biting 7 point victory. Returning to the team after being ‘AWOL’ last week
big Bowser proved to be a focal point at full forward and bagged a lazy 7.
Proey proved again that he needs a crowd to perform and was BOG in his
floating “I’ll go where I want” role. Other good players were Daniel Archer
who showed big man mobility around the ground, little Rex Limbrick with
blistering pace and that amazing leap and Doc Ryan again strong in the
backline.
The reserves assisted with a day of memorable celebrations with a
comfortable 10 goal victory. The power forwards of Nikolai (6 goals) and
snappy dresser Bryan (4 goals) proved to be too much for an iundersized Bean
backline. With Todd Rider (showing form that proved ex coach Sean Williams
to be a shocker) dominating the ball ups contests and the ever elusive
Bagger Dillon taking full advantage. OHA were able to dominate all over the
ground. In a day that proved age is no barrier to playing with the ships
the evergreen Jason Freeman was at his controlling best in the backline and
the youthful Ned Worledge showed that pace most of the pace to be found was
in the youth. All in all a good day’s work boys. |

16 May 2009 - Saints prove too strong in arctic conditions at the
bike track |
|
St Virgils with a blistering first quarter established an unassailable lead
as conditions deteriorated during the day. After allowing Saints to kick 8
goals and gain a 34 point ½ time lead the Ships were playing catch up from
there on in. After outscoring the opposition by 6 goals to 3 during the
next 2 quarters there were hopes for a come from behind wind in the
offering. Unfortunately concentration dropped off in the last quarter and
the momentum was lost. In a disappointing performance Trent Moore was
outstanding and was well supported by Zak with his pace and dazzling
skills. Cal Garvey also showed a welcome return to form and was ably
supported across half back by Doc Ryan and Matty Heenan.
The reserves also endured another close loss in a low scoring game.
Inaccuracy in front of goal was a factor in the result and SOS has
identified this as an area for improvement at training. Buttsy showed that
a season of cricket is a good fitness regime and was outstanding wether
rebounding from half back or driving the ball long into the forward line.
Monksy again showed the desperation he is renowned for on the backline and
the slim Geas continued to show his good form in the ruck. While the result
was a bit disappointing the signs were good for future games.
We look forward to next weeks games against the Beans in front of the past
players. Get along and support the ships. |

9 May 2009 - OHA hand Univer$ity their first defeat in difficult conditions at Geilston Bay |
|
Today we welcomed ladder leader Univer$ity
to Ships dock. The visitors arrived full of confidence after comfortable
victories in the first four rounds while the ships were looking to redeem a
loss suffered during their last home game. In a sea sawing first half the
conversion rate of the OHA forwards saw the home side in front at half time
by two points. Book recruit Ben Langford showed why he was such good value
at Clarence by displaying his vast array of skills at his new home. Brendan
Roger’s was back to his brilliant best across half back and nullified may of
Uni’s forward thrusts. Doc Ryan was his usual oppressive force and his
close checking and attacking style was a pleasure to watch. Sean Hollick
showed glimpses of his true mettle and his attack on the ball was
inspiring. An even third quarter saw the margin reduced to one point at ¾
time and a brilliant defensive effort in the last quarter where Uni were
kept goalless while we scored another couple allowed the boys to walk off
happy but extremely wet winners.
In the reserves the result was never in doubt with Shane Bryan up forward
slotting through 8 majors proving that class will always win out. The silky
smooth Butterworth was again sublime with his vast array of skills and moves
on display. While all players had good games the coach was restricted to
naming a mere 6 and these are listed in the best players below.

2 May 2009 – Ships enjoy smooth sailing in the cool Channel waters |
|
For the first time in a Roster game the Ships travelled to Snug Park to take
on Association new comers Channel. This was also the return to his previous
club by goal kicking freak Chilcott in a opposition jumper. In a polite
welcome back Chilli was able to roam around in Gary Ablett mode gathering
possession at will while slotting 9 sausage rolls on his own. In a totally
dominant affair where all player contributed the Ships piled on goals at
will for the first 3 quarters to hold a commanding ¾ time lead of some 20
goals. While taking the foot of the accelerator in the last quarter allowed
Channel back into the game the final margin of 131 points was a reflection
of where both teams currently sit. Other multiple goal kickers were Banger
(5), Wakey (4), Unsy (2) and the wiley old fox Proey with 2 as well. It was
good to see big red find some form and the ruck and the exquisite skills of
Joel Doyle off half back were a joy to watch. |

25 April – Ships had the bye
ANZAC Day – “We will remember them” |
|
18 April - Richmond too good in final quarter but reserves get on
the winners list |
|
The Ships couldn't close out the contest, being overrun in the final quarter
against Richmond at Geilston Bay today. With the annual Ladies Day being
held inside, the boys were out to impress, and looked good until the early
stages of the final quarter, when Richmond starting finding targets, and
more importantly, the space between the big sticks. The two's were a
happier bunch after a first round loss, accounting for the Blues comfortably
in the second half, running out 40 point winners. |

11 April - A super fit
Chilcott leads OHA to first up win against DOSA |
|
In what was a very lopsided first round Andrew Chilcott lead the seniors to
a comfortable win against DOSA at the Chocolate Factory. The reserves were
less fortunate going down by a solitary goal.
"A fit Chilcott is a good Chilcott" was the topic of conversation around the
ground after he broke out in the second quarter with a 4 goal performance,
finishing with 5 for the game. Bobbing around like a cork in the ocean, it
was the Chilcott that the Ships fans have been waiting to see.
3 first gamers with the club, Arch, Wakey and Mantis, all showed that
they'll be valuable additions to the playing group, causing trouble all
around the ground. New Vice Captain, Craig Unsworth, turned in a trademark
hard running game while the workhorse, James Tierney in the ruck,
contributed all day. Bowering overcame a bad case of the "Grumpy's" at
three quarter time to finish with 7 majors by the end.
The reserves fell just short in a free flowing see-sawing affair. Another
new player to the club, Big Niko, provided a target up forward and finished
with 7, while an inspired out of retirement performance from Mark Williams
showed he'll add plenty to a running half back line in season 2009. |

The Grand Final as
reported by Adam Smith of the Mercury
OHA ended a 20-year senior premiership drought by outlasting Richmond in a
windswept Old Scholars football grand final at North Hobart Oval
yesterday.
A watertight back six proved the difference in the 14.9 (93) to 9.19 (73)
victory, though the Lions had their chances in front of goal and could have
snatched an unlikely
win if not for poor conversion.
The Ships survived an early ambush from their opponents in the opening quarter,
with the Lions bolting out of the blocks to kick the first two goals through
Adam Daft and the last of the term to edge to a five-point quarter-time lead.
From there the OHA side kicked into gear, holding Richmond goalless for an hour
while piling on seven
unanswered goals itself until the 23-minute mark of the third quarter.
A defensive wall of captain Michael Bannister, Joel Doyle and best-afield Callum
Garvey repelled attack after attack, while the Lions did themselves no favours
by
wasting golden opportunities. The lead of 32 points at the final change appeared
enough for the Ships, especially with rain setting in and making conditions
greasy.
But even after conceding the first two goals of the final quarter, the Lions
refused to give in and booted the next four to close to 18 points. Matthew
Zukauskas then
put the result beyond doubt with his third major of the game deep into time-on
in a quarter that went for a ridiculous 37 minutes. Power forward Sam
Bowering
kicked a goal in each term to finish with five, his average against Richmond
this year, while the likes of Ashley Banks and Brad Marsland provided plenty of
drive all day.
It was a great day for the Marsland family, with Brad and youngest brother Jason
playing in the seniors, while Rod kicked three goals to help the reserves side
defeat
St Virgil’s.
After the match, first-year coach Scott McCallum savoured the win, the club’s
first premiership since 1988 when it won the senior reserves double, as it did
yesterday. McCallum is no stranger to success, having filled a cabinet
with trophies from his playing days at Clarence, but admitted it was still a
premiership to celebrate.
‘‘All the things I’ve learnt from Clarence is all about work ethic. The boys
stuck together and achieved this as a group,’’ McCallum said. ‘‘Each individual
grand final
is unique and special in its own right. ‘‘I put this right up with any grand
final I’ve been part of. It’s very special and I’m very honoured to lead this
group and get over the
line. We have a lot of supporters. This is 20 years in the making and I
guess a bit more special there.’’
Lions coach Heath Barwin, who was among his side’s better players with three
goals, was left ruing missed opportunities that could have made such a
difference. ‘‘We had our chances, I thought. To kick three goals worth of points
was not good enough to get us over the line,’’ he said. ‘‘It seems to be the way
against them, we get out to a
lead going into the second quarter and then lapse in concentration. They are not
a side you want to lapse against for five or 10 minutes.’
